On a balmy summer night, sit outside under the stars, and gaze at the stars above.
Listen to the quiet, calm, soothing noises of nature, and be at peace with the world.
The difficulty level is early intermediate.

"A Prayer for Peace"
This piece for flute and piano was composed in March 2022, three weeks after Putin's Russian Army invaded Ukraine.

Amid the terrible events and the senseless loss of life and untold suffering of the people of Ukraine, it's a gentle and humble call for peace.

"A Pause for Thought"
Amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life, take a moment to reflect a while - and pause for a moment - maybe to remember a loved one who is no longer with us.

Take a deep breath for the last lingering note, and let it ring into the distance.....

"Together in Spirit"

Another piece which evokes feelings of remembrance for those no longer with us - or maybe just to capture the stillness and beauty of nature, or to give praise for what we have ...

The optional cello part will add to the ambience, but it is not essential.

"One Day Soon (Maybe)"
This piece was composed during the COVID pandemic (March 2020) when the world was in lockdown - and the title alludes to the sentiment that one day (maybe) we may all be able to meet together, play music together....

Play gently with a full rounded tone and expressive vibrato...

"Memories and Heartbeats"
A reflective piece to evoke feelings of remembrance, or in praise and affection for those we hold dear to our hearts.

Flutists should aim to achieve a full rounded tone and sing the music from the heart.

Be sure to emphasise the treasured memories we share with our loved ones.

"Be Still, Be Calm"

A piece for meditation, evoking feelings of calmness for two flutes and piano.

The piece was originally composed for a flute teacher to play with their students, so the flute 1 part is quite easy throughout.
However, a second version is included in which the parts are swapped around....

"Sunset Over a Distant Horizon"
From the opening piano introduction with its tremolo chords, an atmosphere of mystique is instantly created....

This evocative piece is based on a minor pentatonic scale, giving it a distinct Eastern flavour.

Play it softly and gently, to highlight the sense of pure mystery and beauty....

"Through the Clouds"
Get yourself lost in meditation as the music gradually and gently evolves.

You are on a journey, flying and floating through the clouds...

The second flute part joins in to enhance the evocative melody underpinned throughout with rippling chords and a strong harmonic framework.

"Beside the Gently Flowing Stream"
Picture an idyllic scene of a beautiful old cottage in the heart of the English countryside in the summertime, next to a gently flowing babbling stream...

You're sitting on the riverbank, enjoying a family picnic...
Make sure to play it gently, with a full rounded tone, to create a calm atmosphere.

"Flutterbies"
A softly flowing piece in celebration of the loveliness of butterflies.

Make it as beautiful as you are able and emphasise the flowing melody.

Think of the amazing natural spectacle of a beautiful coloured butterfly in flight.
The music increases in complexity during the second half. Make the music fly!

"Silent Worship"
In 1728, Handel composed this music as an Air for his opera "Tolomeo" ("Ptolemy").

In 1928, poet and composer Arthur Somervell wrote lyrics and set them to the music.
Ever since I heard a recording of the English Tenor, David Hughes singing this, over 40 years ago, I thought it would make a lovely solo for flute and piano.

"Tartini - Sarabanda"
I recently heard a version of this on YouTube and was blown away by this gorgeous melody.

So I arranged it for flute (or two flutes) and piano/harpsichord.

I've transposed it from the original in G minor, up to B minor to suit the range of the flute and to allow the second flute part to appear below the main tune.

"A Glorious Life"
Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II (the Queen of England) passed away on the 8th September 2022, aged 96 years. She had been Queen of the UK and Commonwealth countries for 70 years.

On the day she died, I was moved to compose this piece for flute and piano in her memory.

"Cool, Cool Calypso"

"Boree by Richard Jones"

This charming short Baroque piece for flute and harpsichord is by the English composer Richard Jones (1680 - 1744) (known as "Dicky").

It's adapted from his Suite in A minor for harpsichord, which has 6 short movements. This is the last movement.
